From the front, it appears to be a finely crafted piece of classical furniture. The geometric patterns, executed in Irish stitch, are orderly and composed, reflecting the Protestant aesthetic of “beauty in order.” The thick down-filled cushions and winged sides support the neck and shield against drafts—features that give the “easy chair” its name, originally designed to provide comfort for the elderly or infirm. Yet, upon circling to the back, one seems to enter another world. There, the sun hangs high, birds soar, trees are laden with fruit, and birds rest peacefully. On the ground, deer frolic, ducks glide, and a shepherd tends his flock amidst blooming flowers. Everything is in motion, yet there is no turmoil. Though devoid of religious symbols, it exudes a tranquility that transcends reality. It may not be the Eden of the Bible, but it surely represents the paradise people yearn for—a land with nature, animals, labor, and leisure. Such a chair back is more than mere decoration; it is a longing of the soul. The person seated sees the orderly patterns before them, while leaning against an endless spring behind. We spend our days bustling through the mundane world, often forgetting that there may be a tranquil landscape behind us. The paradise we strive for might never have been far away—just waiting for us to turn around and realize we’ve already arrived.
